Online business offers t-shirts made out of recycled cotton and plastic bottles

Clothing styles are constantly changing. As consumers follow new fashion trends, it is estimated that the average American throws away about 68 pounds of clothing per year to make room in their closet.

On top of that, producing new clothes out of cotton hurts the planet. A cotton T-shirt and a pair of jeans requires 1 pound of fertilizers and pesticides. The cotton t-shirt alone requires 1/3 pound of fertilizers. These chemicals often end up in water supplies and the food chain since many products have cotton seed oil in them and livestock are often fed with feed produced with parts of the cotton plant.

An increasing number of consumers want to shop with a "do no harm" attitude - that is - that their purchases would do no harm to people or the planet. In response, there is a growing trend of eco-fashion that is more hip than hippy.

"Our recycled shirts are soft and comfy and are made in the USA," says Daigle the founder and owner of offyourbackshirts.com. The shirts, "recycle(d)" and "3 trees" (designed by local artist Amy Stout) are made out of 50% recycled post-industrial cotton and 50% recycled plastic bottles - as polyester. "We started this company with a desire to offer products that not only look good, but that you can feel good about wearing. These shirts embody that desire."

To further prove its commitment to the environment, Off Your Back Shirts joined 1% for the Planet, an organization of like-minded businesses that promise to donate at least 1% of gross sales to environmental causes. "It's a double win for us. We provide people with great shirts they can feel good about and in, and we can contribute to the future of our planet at the same time." Daigle says.
