Award Winning Shoes at the 2010 Oscars

Organic choices show stylish love for planet

By Laura Baciu

Environmentally friendly T-shirts at Whole Foods In honor of Earth Day on Sunday, people will celebrate the wonder of the planet.

The fashion-conscious could show their support by wearing clothing and accessories produced without toxic chemicals and made of organic cotton or of sustainable fibers such as corn and bamboo.

Some stores in central Ohio are among those that respect the environment.

Christina Getachew of Substance, 783 N. High St. in the Short North, offers customers responsible ways to dress themselves fashionably.

"Finding good-looking, eco- friendly clothing has been a challenge," she says, "but worth it."

A sweater made from bamboo in camel, ivory and navy by Avalin feels like silk ($83), and knits made from corn by Moral Fervor ($79) feature a monarch butterfly. A fresh group of Stewart Brown organic cottons has a romantic T-shirt and ruffled skirt in white, graphite and medium brown ($65 to $120). Substance donates 2 percent of gross sales to public education in the United States.

Another Short North shop, Fibres at 791 N. High St., carries canvas slip-on shoes from TOMS and also believes in giving back (by donating shoes for kids). Here you'll find designs in camouflage, palm trees on light blue and pink-and-blue patchwork prints ($39). A vegan collection by Matt & Nat uses faux leather in handsome bags and wallets. Among pieces in the group: a billfold in blue ($38) and a black clutch ($62).

The nature-inspired Rowe boutique has found a home at 718 N. High St. Owner Maren Roth opened the store earlier this month. A birch tree occupies the center of the shop, which is decorated in a warm blend of natural leather and industrial metals. Favorite designers include Generra for men and Lauren Moffatt and Nieves Lavi for women.

Jinny, nearby at 844 N. High St., has organic cottons from Augustine of L.A., with '60s-inspired tops and dresses in natural olive, ivory and gray tones ($150 to $370).

Tailfeathers of New Albany has a cool line of Green 3 organic cotton T-shirts ($32) decorated with peace signs and slogans.

On the Northwest Side, Whole Foods Market, 3670 W. Dublin-Granville Rd., stocks not only organic food but also clothing, socks and accessories for men, women and children.

The wording on T-shirts from Mission Playground is done with low-impact dyes and inspires change ($24). "Don't pave on me" is printed on top of a U.S. map. Another one has "Live simply that others might live." And the Green Babies line includes two-piece play sets, jumpers, blankets and rompers ($16 to $38).

Wild Oats, near the Shops at Lane Avenue, has bras, panties, tanks, crews and drawstring pants from Ecoland. Maggies functional organics offers a variety of simple and wrapped camisoles, some with herb and flower designs for women ($17 to $26); and bodysuits with dinosaurs, elephants and rhinos for little ones ($30).

Accessories from the socially conscious World of Good include Vietnamese beaded silk ($30) or color-blocked handbags made of hemp ($18) and hand-woven scarves from Thailand ($20).

The Rail at Nordstrom at Easton Town Center offers abstract designs on men's T-shirts ($50) made of organic cotton by Edun, the company founded by rock musician Bono and wife Ali Hewson.

Organic cotton fashions move body and soul at Yoga on High, 1081 N. High St. Blue Canal takes care of basics for men in tanks and T-shirts ($20 to $30); women can choose from pants, capris and Asian-inspired, off-the-shoulder tops ($30 to $45). Onesies (less than $20) for babies are private-label finds.

Casual footwear is available at Bexley's Hat and Sole, 2378 E. Main St., with Green Toe shoes from Simple. Hemp, jute and canvas work in unison with natural cork/latex foot beds and soles of recycled car tires. An unstructured tan loafer for men is accented in pink for women ($85), and a flip-flop called toe foo ($60) is tan with meadow-green highlights.

Easton Shoes, 1880 W. Henderson Rd., has comfortable, casual styles for women and men. Finn Comfort orthopedic support shoes are handcrafted in Germany. Among fashionable choices: a flip-flop in crackled black patent or silver, gold or coral with a wedge heel and buckle ($195).
