Green is Good

In the past, green fashion conjured up unflattering images of hemp clothing and macramé sandals – but not any more. High-end London footwear company Terra Plana is leading the way in the style and sustainability stakes with its range of environmentally friendly shoes that featured recently at Estethica, a new section devoted to eco-friendly clothing at London Fashion Week.

Terra Plana, whose creative director Ajoy Sahu has worked at Prada, uses stitched artisan construction instead of toxic glues, which also means the shoes last longer and are more repairable. Vegetable-tanned leathers are used as opposed to chrome tanning, which minimises environmental impact. They also feature 90 per cent latex soles or recycled rubber soles, and 100 per cent recycled foam footbeds and recycled card for shoe boxes.

Terra Plana is now available in New Zealand thanks to Anna Harding, who last year set up distribution company Cause & Effect. “I wanted to find products that were ethically produced so I could shop guilt-free,” Harding says. “It’s vital for people to start replacing their current purchasing decisions with commodities that have little or no detrimental effect on the planet. It frustrates me so much, that is why I got into it. I didn’t want to join Greenpeace, but something I like is shopping. You may as well change what you know.”

This chic and sporty thong, back, brown colored leather sandals from Chaco Naot Simple and othersgoes beautifully with casual wear, from Bermuda shorts to long cotton skirts. Ergonomically designed for comfort, the Switch features a combination fabric and leather upper and a soft, molded polyurethane footbed with excellent arch support for all-day wear. The sandal’s Vibram sole is ultra-light and offers durable traction on wet and dry surfaces
