Shoppers go mad for eco-bag In England

Basingstoke area today for just £5 disappeared off the shelves in a matter of
minutes.
The Anya Hindmarch "I'm not a plastic bag" bag was available from selected Sainsbury's stores around the country from 8am, including branches in The Malls and Hatch Warren Retail Park, in Basingstoke, and in Mulfords Hill, Tadley.
Because of the limited number of bags in stock - the Hatch Warren store had 90 and The Malls and Tadley store just 30 - the Hindmarch creation was up for sale on a first come, first served basis.
Queues started forming as early as 6am - and many people still went home disappointed as the limited number of bags were snapped up within minutes of the doors being opened.
The environmentally-friendly shopping bag was designed in a bid to persuade people to reuse bags - but after it was seen on the arms of celebrities, such as Keira Knightley and Lilly Allen, it became a must-have fashion item and has attracted offers on the auction website eBay of up to £200.
Peter Smith, store manager at Hatch Warren's Sainsbury's where The Gazette's leisure editor Joanne Mace was the first person to buy one of the prized bags, said selling them was great fun.
"As a male, it was very hard to understand the attraction of a bag," he explained. "But when I saw the ladies' faces light up with a big smile when they received their bag, I could see how important it was to them."
He added: "It was a nice and different way to start the day and there was a real buzz in the store."
On Friday Sainsbury's will not be handing out disposable plastic bags in any of its stores but will be giving its customers bags made from 100 per cent recycled material - which usually cost 10p - for free.
The supermarket hopes the move will encourage customers to reuse the more environmentally-friendly bags on future visits.
