Award Winning Shoes at the 2010 Oscars
And the Oscar goes to…  Another night of fashion at the 82nd annual Oscars red carpet this past Sunday, March 7th.  While everyone looked radiant and stunning, there were only a few stars who showcased their shoes.  Many of the females chose to wear long sophisticated gowns (though I’m sure the shoes underneath were still glamorous). For those who did not, we got the [...]

Brady Cunningham blends comfort with eco-conscious

By Catherine Bayley, Star-News Correspondent

After graduating from Parsons School of Design in New York, clothing designer Brady Cunningham moved to Los Angeles, where she met her business partner, Kristin Dickson. Together they've started the label Souvenir, integrating fabrics made from bamboo and silk with those made from hemp, and incorporating the reuse of vintage fabrics.

Souvenir has been featured on www.Daily Candy.com and in Nylon magazine. To find out more, e-mail souvenirla@gmail.com.

Cunningham is visiting Wilmington for the next few weeks with her boyfriend, the actor Jason Schwartzman, while he's working on The Marc Pease Experience. Currents caught up with her for a quick chat on Sunday.

Tell us about your spring line. Basically, this stuff is very simple, straightforward, all black.

Nice. We wanted to create a project for ourselves basically, we didn't want to say, "O.K. we're going to be designers." We didn't want to start a line in the traditional sense because it was intimidating, and we had worked for designers who had struggled so much, and we wanted to do it and have fun doing it. … So we decided what we'll do is, we won't start a fashion line, we'll just do an art show at our friend's store and we'll approach it like that. But as we worked on it, we decided we didn't want it to be a one-shot thing, and it completely evolved into something else. I was also reading this … book called Cradle to Cradle, which basically talks about waste, reusing and recycling.

Yeah, people are constantly getting rid of clothes. And some fabrics disintegrate and some don't. So we decided if we're going to be designers, we wanted to make clothes that are really comfortable, but are also really conscious of the environment. We used organic fabrics like hemp mixed with vintage fabrics.

It sounds like you're trying to help people live a more eco-friendly lifestyle with the clothes they wear. Kristin and I just realized that if we wanted to start something that would have longevity we have to put those perimeters on ourselves even if it was harder because it was the right thing to do.

So, where are your clothes being sold? Well, we don't have any representation or anything. We shopped it all ourselves. We took pictures of our friends wearing the clothes. Our spring stuff is only at Scout and Creatures of Comfort in L.A., and for fall, we went to New York with pictures of our stuff and went into the stores ourselves. It's terrible.

Kind of like going on an audition? Yeah, basically.

From the pictures, it looks like your stuff has structure to it, but is comfortable at the same time. Yeah, I live in this stuff. Last summer I lived in this dress. They're just big cozy dresses.
