Banking on earth-friendly baby clothes

Baby Blend Tees Babies and toddlers may be too young to have a sense of style or even to appreciate a clean shirt from a dirty shirt.

However, a Westchester entrepreneur is hoping they grow to understand the difference between a conventional, chemically-made garment and one that is environmentally friendly.

Jennifer Leaphart is planting that seed of eco-consciousness with Baby Blend Tees, a 100 percent certified organic clothing line exclusively designed for babies and youngsters up to size 6.

“A conventional T-shirt requires one-third of a pound of chemicals to make,” said the mother of two who founded her eco-friendly business in late 2005.

After her own search for hip organic baby clothes was unsuccessful, she designed her own line. Not only are the clothes better for the environment, they also help control allergies, pose less of a toxic risk on a baby’s skin, and are softer.

“[Baby Blend Tees] are 100 percent organic cotton, USA made, and unbleached --so there’s no chemicals involved,” Leaphart said. “We also use water-based inks which are chemical-free.”

Leaphart’s vision is now a growing business with close to 100 stores nationwide selling the chemical-free tees, known for their quirky printed sayings such as the top seller which reads “World’s Cutest Alarm Clock.”

Leaphart said the chemical-free procedure for making the clothes is appealing to consumers across the board, ranging from “the grandma buying gifts to the environmentalist buying for their own kids.

Marny Turvill, a pediatrician and owner of Healthy Green Goods, an earth-friendly store based in Evanston, said interest in organic baby clothes is also growing among her consumer base.

“Absolutely, the organic clothes are better for anyone’s skin because they don’t leave any chemical residue,” Turvill said, adding that organic baby clothes are one of the top sellers at her store.

The response to Leaphart’s merchandise was positive at the 2007 All Things Organic Conference and Trade Show May 5-8 at McCormick Place.

“This is our first all-organic trade show,” Leaphart said. “We usually do the gift shows and the children’s clothing shows. I have an East Coast and a West Coast sales rep,” Leaphart said.

Leaphart expects to open her first retail store in Oak Park in about a month, and will continue to push environmental awareness with biodegradable packaging and recyclable coffee bags.

The company also donates a portion of its proceeds to the 1% For the Planet, an organization of businesses that funds grassroots environmental causes throughout the world.

“Our growth in about a year and a half has been tremendous so hopefully it keeps growing the way it is,” Leaphart said.
